The Ideal Work from Home (WFH) Setup

Our world today is constantly evolving, and a person that adapts effectively is bound for success. Working from home is not a new phenomenon, but the coronavirus pandemic has made it an unplanned necessity for most organizations. Even as the COVID-19 crisis recedes eventually, most people have discovered that they don’t need large office buildings – they don’t need to be in the office daily.

A decent setup is important when it comes to working remotely. The right setup will bring normalcy and productivity into your work. Even though it appears cool in movies to see people working remotely from their beds, this is not the case in real life.  

A wrong work setup reduces productivity and also affects your health and work life. It can cause headaches, blurred vision, neck and back strain, poor body posture, and so on. 

The ideal home office setup 

A typical home office should be a different space in your home that is properly furnished for work. To create an effective, safe workspace for the long term, you need to have the following setup. 

  1. A dedicated workspace

Ideally, most people prefer to use a small room that they can hold their desk and computer. They’ll close the door for the basic need to separate work life from home life. 

A lot of employees don’t have any extra space, but some can convert their guest room into a dual-purpose space – used as an office and also as a guest room when they have visitors.  

If your home doesn’t have an extra space you can use as your dedicated office space, find a specific space you can use that is out of the rest of the household.  

  1. A comfortable chair

There are many bad chairs out there that can cause serious injury to users over time. Chairs found in the dining and on the deck are mostly not at the right height. They don’t always encourage you to have an upright posture. 

Since you’ll be spending most of your work time sitting down, you need to invest in a comfortable chair. The chair should be an excellent solution to your backache problems and they should have immense lumbar support. 

It is recommended to use an ergonomic desk chair. Workers who use ergonomic chairs have fewer negative symptoms throughout the day than employees who don’t. 

  1. The right keyboard

It is important to invest in good devices, particularly in an ergonomic keyboard. Since you’ll need to spend a lot of time on your computer as you perform official work, your wrist and hands need to function properly all the time.  

If your hand and wrists are not comfortable, you can develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This is why you need to invest in a proper ergonomic keyboard for a comfortable working environment.

  1. Good lighting

You can easily underestimate the effects of your workspace on your productivity. Lighting is mostly an area people don’t consider. Ideally, your workspace has enough indirect light for you to easily read papers and view physical objects. However, it is best to have overhead lighting such as from a ceiling lamp. 

Indirect lighting, such as lights that are not in your direct view or light that reflects on your monitor can cause glare on your monitor screen when the sun is up. Natural light is great, but you need to reduce it by using shades or curtains so it doesn’t create glare.  

You shouldn’t keep a lamp close to your monitor, because you’ll end up with competing light sources. If you need lamps for additional lighting, place them in a way that they don’t create glare on the screen of your monitor, and shouldn’t be in your direct view when you’re working on the computer. 

Also, ensure that the brightness on your monitor is not too dim or too bright, both of which can lead to eyestrain. Both are subjective, but a good rule of thumb is that you should set the lighting intensity of the monitor just a little brighter than your ambient lighting and that ambient lighting should be enough to read paper documents without needing extra light.

When it comes to working remotely, you will need the right online tools. The best blend of these tools will make your work more efficient and you’ll be more productive.  

Although you may have the right tools in your official workplace, your newly established work from home setup not be loaded with these tools. You, therefore, need to get all the vital work from home tools. 

Some of these tools include:

  • Communication tools like Zoom, Slack, and Skype 
  • Management and monitoring tools such as Jotform, Hubstaff, and Officevibe 
  • Remote access tools

As you work remotely, ensure you set clear boundaries for when you begin and stop working. Get dressed in the morning so you can feel ready for work, ensure your TV is off so you can avoid distractions, and as you get done for the day, turn off the computer if possible.
